Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, has pledged significant enhancements in electricity reliability, accessibility, and sustainability across the country in 2026, building on foundational progress achieved in 2025.
In his New Year message to Nigerians and residents of Oyo State, the Minister described 2025 as a period of strategic groundwork and targeted advancements in the power sector, despite ongoing challenges. He highlighted notable improvements in national grid stability, largely attributed to the ongoing Phase 1 of the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), also known as the Siemens Project, which has substantially reduced frequent grid collapses experienced in prior years.
“With the continuation of the PPI, we are committed to delivering a resilient grid that eliminates disruptions as a recurring issue,” Adelabu stated.
Looking ahead, the Minister outlined key priorities for 2026, including:
– Further strengthening grid stability and expanding transmission infrastructure to minimise outages.
– Deepening collaboration with Electricity Distribution Companies (DisCos) to enhance service delivery and accelerate nationwide metering programmes.
– Advancing the ‘Light Up Nigeria’ initiative, with targeted support for industrial clusters and agricultural hubs to drive economic growth and employment.
– Promoting renewable energy integration, particularly solar and hydropower solutions, to extend reliable power to underserved and rural communities.
Adelabu emphasised the need for collective effort, urging state governments, local communities, private sector stakeholders, and citizens to partner in these reforms. He specifically called for vigilance in protecting power infrastructure and adopting energy-efficient practices as essential contributions to national development.
The Minister expressed gratitude for the patience and resilience shown by Nigerians, reaffirming the government’s unwavering commitment to powering homes, industries, and economic aspirations.
