The Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGI) has formally refuted claims that the federal government removed subsidies or directed an increase in Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) pump prices, clarifying that recent price hikes are the consequence of decisions made by private operators.
Matilda Johnson, PCNGI’s Brands and Corporate Communications Manager, emphasized:
“For absolute clarity: while pricing matters fall under the purview of the appropriate regulatory agencies, no directive or policy has been issued by the federal government to alter CNG pump prices.”
PCNGI explained that while certain companies like NIPCO Gas have raised prices—reportedly moving from around ₦230 to between ₦380 and ₦450 per Standard Cubic Metre (SCM)—these decisions are commercially driven and not the result of any government instruction.
The agency reiterated its mandate under President Bola Tinubu’s administration: to catalyze adoption of cleaner, more affordable fuel alternatives nationwide, not to set or regulate prices. Regulatory authority for CNG pricing resides with the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA).
